The conservative and pro-business German government proposed a law to switch off all nuclear power plants by the end of 2022. Polls indicate that 85 percent of Germans want nuclear power to be phased out within a decade. Jake Schmidt, international climate policy director at NRDC, provides his frontline perspective on international climate policy. In December 2011 countries will meet in Durban, South Africa, for the next high-level negotiation on climate change (the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties or COP17). This meeting comes as new temperature records are being set, key countries are moving forward with plans to cut their emissions, and the clean energy economy is growing rapidly. Yet, international climate negotiations are struggling to implement the agreements reached in Copenhagen and Cancun. These agreements, if implemented, could lay a critical foundation for international action. The webinar aired September 6, 2011.
