Maria Ivanova
Dr. Maria Ivanova is Assistant Professor of Government and Environmental Policy at The College of William and Mary and the Director of the Global Environmental Governance Project at the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy
Her research focuses on global environmental governance, the effectiveness of the United Nations, and the role of the United States in international environmental affairs. Her recent work analyzes the history and performance of the international environmental architecture with a focus on the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the leadership of the United States in international environmental institutions. In addition, Dr. Ivanova is engaged in campus sustainability and in particular governance frameworks for higher education institutions for climate change and sustainability. She teaches undergraduate, graduate, and professional courses in Global Environmental Governance, International Organizations, Environmental Diplomacy, and Climate Change. Maria Ivanova is a member of the Implementation Advisory Committee to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. In 2007, she was named Professor of the Year by students at The College of William and Mary.
A Bulgarian national, Dr. Ivanova holds a PhD and two master's degrees (in international relations and environmental policy) from Yale University and a BA from Mount Holyoke College (summa cum laude). She has worked at the Environment Directorate of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris and at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in Stockholm. She has lectured at NASA Langley Research Center, at the United Nations in New York, Geneva and Nairobi, UN University in Tokyo, Peking University in China, and many others. She is the co-editor of "Global Environmental Governance: Options & Opportunities" (with Daniel Esty) and author and co-author of articles and chapters on governance, globalization, and the environment. Her forthcoming book analyzes the performance of the United Nations Environment Programme.
